The base material keeps the skin dry, the center section is insulation and the top layer keeps rain off. He also bought the Church of Nazzerine building which has several businesses in it. PROGRAM – Ray introduced Police Chief Jeff Meyers. He did a power point which included the in the police car computer readouts that displays all calles with a whole lot of information. He also went through the building of the new jail expansion addition for women. It is 28 x 28 and will hold 12 females (10 in the dorm room and 2 in the bad girl cell. After all is said and done the jail will hold 18 males and 12 females. Another outstanding program by the Chief.

Program – Jerry Schaefer related facts about the battle at Adobe Wells in 1874. Highlighted were: there were 2 battles 10 years apart. Location was the Texas Panhandle. Kit Carson trued to rescue several women against 3000 Indians. This failed. The Sand Creek massacre in 1865 and the Fetterman massacre on 1866 led up to the Medicine  Lodge Treaty giving the panhandle to the Indians,  but the buffalo hunters setup camp and were attacked by 300 indians. They held on for 3 days when Billy Dixon made a 1,500 made an outstanding shot bringing down one indian. The tribes were relocated to Oklahoma. Another outstanding job by Jerry!

Program was Mike Lytle who told us all about oyster farming. He started in 1987. He relayed about oyster industry history. And then told us how to grow them. Oysters in Gray’s Harbor are Pacific Oysters. They are not natural; they have been brought in. Mike grows them on ropes which keeps them out of the mud. This way they have a good survival rate. Oysters from different areas taste differently because of the rivers that feed the harbor. He sells in the U. S., Canada, Hong Kong, etc. He employs about 20 workers. This was a very good overview of his oyster business. Well done Mike!

Trooper Rabe and trooper in training, Mariakis, from the Washington State Patrol gave todays program. The two primary topics concerned the “Move Over Emphasis” now being implemented.  It is currently the rule that is you are on a roadway with two lanes of travel in your direction, you are required to move to the opposite lane away from an emergency vehicle with its lights on if that lane is open.  If not, you need to at least slow down.  There have been far too many accidents where emergency vehicles have been hit and serious injuries have resulted.  While many studies have been conducted as to why this is happening, there are no definitive answers, other than distraction or speed, separation by space seems to be helping.

Also addressed are the regulations pertaining to marijuana. To make matters less confusing, one should apply the regulations of alcohol as a guide.  This is true of use in public, while driving and transport.  Unlike alcohol, the way to measure amounts of marijuana within the blood stream are much more involved than a breathalyzer test.  The standard practice for determining an arrest for use is by levels of impairment demonstrated by the subject.

Also addressed was the use of body cams on officers. It is considered that this practice is not likely for the State Patrol as the cost of outfitting all of the officers would be high, but the cost for storage for all of the date would be astronomical.  In addition, costs for producing this date for public requests, both in time and funds would not outweigh possible benefits.

Jeani Shofner, lay pastor for Hoquiam Presbyterian Church spoke of the church hosting the River Campers.  Catholic Community Services began the camping program at Amazing Grace Lutheran Church during the months of June, July and August.  Churches by law, are allowed to host such encampments for a period of 90 days and must wait 12 months before hosting the camp again. Campers must make application to live in the camp, allow a background check and be voted in by the membership of the camp.  There are specific rules that must be followed or the camper is not allowed to remain.

Catholic Community Services provides the fencing around the encampment, the tents and living essentials. The church provides water and a safe environment.

The past two months has provided quite a journey for the church and her. She noted that they were approached to host the camp just 2 weeks prior to having to move from Amazing Grace Lutheran Church in Aberdeen.  This provided a great deal of animosity within the community that this was intentional in order to slip it past the citizens.  The initial meetings concerning the camp were very hostile.  During the next few weeks, many of the communities concerns were found to be without base.  This was due to several factors.  The Hoquiam location was much further from the original riverside locations and therefore, drew less of a transient population in for reasons other than living in the location.  The tarps on the fencing provides a measure of security for both the campers and limited visibility to the community.

The church has received a great deal of support from Organizations such as Cosmos Fiber in the donation of pallets, local citizens for food donations and local organizations for services.

Mrs. Shofner in no way candy coated the subject, but emphatically stated that benefits of hosting the camp far and away out weighed the problems.

Brett Pelan:  He is active in football, basketball, soccer, band, renaissance club, spirit club, foodball, jazz band and drum-line.  Community activities include the foodbank and volunteering for children sports camps.  He plans to attend a four-year college and pursue a degree in mechanical engineering.

We were visited by representatives from the Karr House; Angie Silvan, Community Awareness and Marketing Manager, Gayle Harriman, Executive Director and Kim Harness, RN.  The facility has been purchased by Enlivant and will be under going a name change to Riverside Place.  With the change will come a more committed approach to care and quality of life programs for the residents.  A holistic approach to senior living designed to help residents thrive in mind, body, and spirit.  In addition, they are working to be able to provide a number of rooms for residents that have exhausted their private funding and have to rely on DSHS for funding of their stay.

Program – Rudy introduced Mike Reynolds the chief engineer for Oval Strapping. He us responsible for all engineers the company has world wide. Their machines wrap paper pulp in bales using either wire or a strapping made out of paper that is twisted and bonded together which stays on the bales during processing. He showed videos on the wrapping process and on the distilling making equipment.

Don Fiene fell and had surgery to remove a blood clot. He is in rehab in Olympia.

Today’s Program

Chris King, employed by Harbor Hydrolics and a lifelong steam engine enthusiast, spoke today of the restoration of #45, the Steam Engine purchased in 1908 by the Polson Logging Camp and used in various capacities until the early 1960’s. For the nearly 40 years, it made its home at Last Spur Park on Lincoln Street in Hoquiam. Unfortunately, in 1998, the engine was given to the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railway. Plans for it’s restoration went awry and the engine was sold to Steam locomotive collector, Chris Baldo. From 2012 to late 2014, negotiations between Mr. Baldo and the Polson Museum Board (Aided by generous support of Tim Quigg and his cousin George Donovan) the museum was able to return the #45 to Hoquiam in June of 2015.

Chris is the lead in this restoration and had many stories to tell. It is the intention of the group to restore the engine to working order, not just a cosmetic fix that makes it look good. In doing so, the Railroad Camp Building on the Museum property becomes a working, breathing exhibit of what a logging camp was.

Today’s meeting’s primarily purpose was to review Logger’s Playday events and to insure we are ready. Of the three major projects: Button sales, Salmon BBQ and Concessions, we found that we are set to go, but could always use additional help in the concession stands (speak to Pete Hegg) and at the Salmon BBQ (speak to Ed Wayman). We still do not know if there will be any consideration on price afforded to us on the salmon, but we should know more on Wednesday. The price of the tickets is $15.00 per person and 10.00 for a child.

On Thursday, September 10^th, there will be a potato scrub and peanut bagging at the Washington School – 5:30 PM

Friday, set up of BBQ equipment and moving of concession equipment to Washington School – 2 PM

Saturday, Wrap hot dogs and prepare for sales for concessions at 12:00 Noon.

Salmon BBQ will have the pits fired up at 1:00 PM   Lions Morgan and McFeeley will have coleslaw from Duffy’s, Wayman and Lanning will pick up potatoes from Swansons and dinner will be served from 2:00 PM to 6:30 PM.
