King Lion Seppo called the meeting to order.

Birthdays – Jim Bucknell and Dee Johnson.

Next Tuesday we will have 6 students of the month.

On the 26th we will have all the students of the month for the year.

Program – Ian  Cope from the PUD. He told us where and what he has been doing since he was last year several years ago. He is now the Communications Director and the Government Relations Director for the PUD. He puts the ads and such out to the public about what is going on. He also told us about alternative power that is solar, wind, etc but not water. And he brought up the rebate programs. It was a lot of very good information that affects us all.

King Seppo called the meeting to order and Lion Pete led the singing which rivaled the Mormon Tabernacle in quality.

Guests today were Ann and Monte, Lions from Kalama.

Installation of Officers is scheduled for June 18th at 5:30 PM.

Congrats to Lauren Kuhn, granddaughter of Lion Mel, for singing the National Anthem at the NBA game in Boston.

No Program today but we did hear from Lions Larry and Dee on their winter excursions in the great Southwest.

King Lion Seppo joined the Clallam Bay Seiku Lions Club in a nationally recognized beach cleaning.

The meeting was called, as always, on time by King Lion Seppo and singing led by Lion Pete V.L. and was carried in a mediocre tempo.

No guests were present.

Installation of Officers will be held on June 18th.  Lion Jerry S. read the nominations of the officers, was seconded and passed unanimously.  No further reading and voting will be necessary.

The Zone meeting was held last Thursday in Aberdeen .  It was reported that Raymond/Willapa Harbor is now the largest club in the zone with 74 members.

The Scholarship Committee is now forming for this year.

The Program for today was Ted Amelio the incoming Director of Physical Therapy for Pacific Care.  Ted announced the open  house to be taking place May 11th through May 13th with the GRAND OPENING on May 14th.  We all should make an effort to stop by and visit this most important part of our community.   Ted did report that therapy has continued at the Karr House and Channel Point.  Most informative program from a naturally gifted speaker.

Announcements:

1. We received a thank you letter from Fritzie Sanchez for the recent nomination of student of the month.
2. The zone meeting will take place at 6:00 PM, this Thursday, April 16^th at the Ocean Palace in Aberdeen.
3. King Lion Seppo is continuing his work on arranging a visitation to Camp Leo later this summer.
4. White Canes Day is May 1^st. There are still two vacant shifts that Lion Ray Pumphrey needs to fill.  Please contact his if you can help.
5. Due to an early graduation date, June 5^th, Sudents of the month will be awarded for April, May and June during the Meeting on May 12^th.

Students of the month:

Karen Mudd:  She participates in band functions such as Marching Band, Pep Band, Concert Band and Jazz band.  She has also helped with the productions of Zombie Prom and Footloose.  Karen has two jobs, taking care elderly folk and cleaning rental homes.  Her future plans include completing an AA at Grays Harbor College, then transfer to a university to obtain a BA in Music

Jeremy Glasgow:  Participates in Band, Jazz Band, Drumline and Mr. Fantastic.  Community activities include playing in the Bear Cats Pep Band, HHS Cancer Relay Team and Foodball.  He has interned at the D & R Theater learning about sound mixing and concert setup. He too plans to earn his AA in music at Grays Harbor College, then pursue a career in music production.

Program:

Tom Kloepping from Grays Harbor Hospital Pharmacy spoke of the elderly (Refered to those 64 years of age or older) and dangers we face with the medications being prescribed due to our bodies showing natural signs of aging.  Although we may have taken a particular medication for some time, changing conditions may change the way we react to the medication.  Additionally, as more medications are prescribed, the danger of the medications mixing to produce adverse side effects is increased.  He suggests that we should be aware of the medication being taken, know the purpose and side effects of each medication and have an opening dialogue with either the doctor or pharmacist (or both) to know in advance of potential problems.

Program – Jerry Schaefer did slide show and talk on Male Siblings and Their Careers. right after the civil war, there was the homestead program. Parents needed large families (6 – 12 kids) to make it work and they wanted the kids to work together as a unit. Some of the siblings were involved in either  law enforcement or outlawing (robbing banks and trains) Examples of sibling units – Earp brothers, Younger brothers, Thompson brothers, Dalton Brothers, Masterson brothers, Logon brothers, James brothers, Clanton brothers. Katchum brothers, Tibbit brothers, Reno brothers and DeAutremort brothers. Jerry explained what each group was involved with. GREAT PRESENTATION AND INFORMATION.

Seppo related spending time with his grandkids in Seattle. One is into Lacross and the other soccer. Sound like he had his hands full transporting them aroung.

Program introduced by Jerry McDeely was Mark McFeely. He is the plant manager for Hoquiam Plywood. They have 100 – q06 people working there 5 to 6 days a week. They ship a lot of plywood to Canada, 20 million in sales. Hoquiam Plywood was started tin 1955 and owned by shareholders, but now it is owned by Red Wood Empire. Good presentation with lots of information.

Announcements:

1. $300.00 was donated toward the scoreboard at Olympic Stadium.
2. The new benches we purchased have been delivered to the city and it is hoped that the installation of these benches wilil come shortly.
3. A reminder that the slate of officers needs to be complete by the later part of April. Lion Pete Vander Linden volunteered to fill one of these positions.
4. The District 19G conference will be held on May 15^th & 16. Anyone interested in attending should contact lion Jerry Schaefer.
5.  The sign-up sheet for White Canes was distributed seeking help on May 1st.
6.  A note of appreciation was extended to Lion Jerry Schaefer and his wife Nola for their efforts in making our charter party a success.

Program:

Katie Lutz, a 2006 graduate of Hoquiam High School and former Hoquiam Lions student of the month. Spoke of her year in Costa Rica.  After high school, she attended the Willamette University, then served for 2 years of national service with Americorps.  She then worked an additional year as a resident naturalist for the University of Georgia, Costa Rica.

Costa Rica was described as a small nation making up less that .03 percent of the world land mass, but having over 5% of the world’s bio diversity.  This is due in part to the proximity to the equator, tropical climate and variations in local altitudes.  The country is supported by small farming, coffee production, but mostly Tourism.  Because of this, large areas of land are protected so tourists may take advantage of the abundant wildlife.

Katie lived in the upper altitude area on a small farm.  In addition to dairy and coffee farming, the family specialized in animal rescue of abandoned or injured animals, rehabilitating then releasing them back to the wild.  Katie also used her language skills to lead nature walks around the area for tourists.

Also shown was a plethora of photos taken during her stay in Costa Rica.  A very interesting program.

The Pot:  The name of Ken Johnson was drawn.  Unfortunately, he was not present and the funds will carry over to next week.

On March 16th, Janice Erickson, wife of Jerry Erickson, passed at Grays Harbor Community Hospital.  Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 28, 2015, at Immanuel Baptist Church. You may access the obituary at www.colemanmortuary.net.

Joan Patton, past zone chairman and president of Central Park Lions, has had hip surgery and is rehabilitating at Montesano Health & Rehab.

Guest Speaker:  Dan Varland, PhD; executive director of Coastal Raptors.  Coastal Raptors was founded in 2009 with the purpose of conducting scientific research and monitoring on raptors along coastlines; providing education programs on coastal raptors and the coastal environment; training wildlife biologists in the tools and techniques needed to survey, capture and mark raptors along coastlines and collaborating with experts in wildlife research and management on developing, monitoring and sharing best management practices for coastal raptors.  Over the past 20 years, over 1,000 surveys of our coastlines have been completed.  As always, Dan provided a very interesting program.

Meeting was called to order by King Lion Seppo.  Singing was better than usual due to the number of guests to show off our warbling prowess.

Boy and Girl of the Month were introduced. Fritzi Sanchez, a well travelled young lad, bilingual and with many school activities plans to be a Dental Assistant after graduation.  Luke Creviston is musically inclined and runs Cross Country and plans on entering the medical field after graduation from the University of Washington.

Today’s program, presented by Lonnie Howell Hoquiam Building Inspector, was not only interesting but timely.  He addressed the landslides in January and the insurance foibles and pitfalls.  Also covered are some possible plans for building removal.

I believe the pot went unclaimed.

It was brought up to have all the students of the month for the school year here at the end of the school year for lunch.

Also brought up was a donation (if needed) for the score board at Olympic stadium.

Program was Chris Hill, Cora Foss, Chris Spurline, Ken Albet and Alex Eddy from the Grays Harbor College upcoming play – Light in piezza. They did 3 numbers for us.

Pot – Pete VanDerlinden

The usual opening songs and pledge were led by lion Pete Vander Linden.  He spent the past two weeks in intensive singing therapy and the results are impressive.

There were no guests today and no reports.

Announcements:  There will be a board meeting at 12:00 Noon this Thursday, February 26, 2015, at the Hoquiam Elks.  For those attending, Pizza will be provided.

The annual charter party will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2015, also at the Hoquiam Elks Lodge.  Happy hour will begin at 5:30 PM with dinner to follow at 6:30 PM.  The dinner will feature pork roast or a chicken dish for those who prefer.

Program:  Curtis Dawson, executive director of the Grays Harbor YMCA was our program.  He spoke of the multitude to programs featured by the Y, but wanted to focus upon Achievement Gap.  This is where children of lower income families experience less opportunities to continue learning in after school situations and during summer breaks.  With each passing year, the gap continues to widen,  The YMCA has partnered with over twelve school districts to provide programs where these individuals have the opportunity to learn without the stigma of being taken from classes (intervention) to catch up.

While the Y continues to provide the better known programs, swimming, sports, camp, it is evident that this is not your grandfather’s Y.
