Club Projects

Our main “fund raising” projects are :
Rain Derby : Tickets are sold to the public for guesses predicting the annual rainfall in Hoquiam. Prizes totaling $1800, are awarded to winners. If a person guesses the EXACT Annual AND December rainfall, an additional $4000 bonus will be added to the $1000 top prize for a total of $5000. This fund raiser has been an annual Lions event for 63 years.
Fireworks sales : The Club operates a stand for selling fireworks to the public during the week of July 4th. The stand is staffed by Lions members 11 hours each day.
Salmon Barbeque : Each September in the City of Hoquiam, there is a one day celebration called Loggers Playday. It’s Hoquiam’s biggest day of the year. Club members cook and serve 400-500 barbequed salmon dinners to the public this day.
Logger’s Playday Concession Stand : The Club operates a sandwich and refreshment stand during the actual Logger’s Show. 5000+ attend this show where contests of logging skills are held.

Service Activities :
Youth Program : We support a number of youth programs through the schools and local youth groups. * Each month, at a regular meeting, we honor a high school senior boy and girl chosen for their dedication to the school and to the community. * Our Club awards 5 – $1000 scholarships each year to graduating seniors. (4 – Academic (with one being awarded for a science discipline) and 1 – Vocational.
Sight and Hearing Impaired : Together with our normal participation in Lions International sight and hearing projects , we further provide glasses and hearing aids for needy children and adults in our community. * In cooperation with the Hoquiam School District, we sponsor continuous screening for younger students – at certain grade levels – to test visual acuity and hearing throughout the school year.
Highway clean-up : The Club participates in Washington State’s “Adopt-a-Highway” program by keeping a two-mile section of highway free of litter.
Food Bank : We make a donation to a local contest between high schools – Hoquiam Grizzlies and Aberdeen Bobcats – called Foodball. As Hoquiam and Aberdeen are contiguous, the sports rivalry is fierce. Foodball is a continuance of this rivalry that produces a huge amount of food and cash to the local food banks.
